REDMOND, WASHINGTON – A Microsoft employee was allegedly stabbed more than a dozen times as he left the office after a day’s work. According to a probable cause statement from the Redmond Police Department, the 26-year-old engineer was waiting at an intersection outside Microsoft headquarters on February 22. The victim was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where authorities last said he was in “critical” condition. While the victim’s name has not yet been released, authorities arrested 27-year-old Joseph Cantrell for the assault.

Police said they followed the suspect to his apartment through the key fob he used to get in. According to authorities, Cantrell was also a Microsoft employee, but at a different location and division. Police say he locked himself in his apartment for many hours until he was arrested at 1 am Thursday, Komonews reported.

Joseph Cantrell accused of second-degree murder of a Microsoft employee

The worker told police he heard someone yell as he approached them while waiting for the crosswalk signal to change. He informed authorities that he had been repeatedly stabbed after turning around. His wife told police that after he was stabbed, his fall caused his Apple Watch to warn her. Authorities say the man ran away after a witness yelled at him to stop stabbing, Startelegram reported.

Residents of a neighboring apartment complex notified police after seeing a trail of blood in his building and tracing it to a third-floor hallway. Later, the police went to the place and observed the surveillance images. They reported seeing a man wearing a maroon shirt with a “yellow sunburst design”, a puffy black coat, dark gloves, and dark jeans.

The assault victim has confirmed that she doesn’t know Cantrell. Police claimed to have also seen the Microsoft security camera footage and reported that the suspect’s clothing in the video matched what Cantrell had been seen wearing in the apartment. After a search warrant was approved, police entered Cantrell’s apartment and took him into custody. He is charged with attempted second degree murder.
