A Florida babysitter repeatedly abused a girl over the weekend, lied about tumbling and now faces a felony charge for the girl’s serious head injuries, authorities say. Leonor Garcia, 62, is charged with one count of aggravated child abuse causing great bodily harm, according to Miami-Dade County court records reviewed by Law&Crime. Details of the allegation come from a Miami-Dade Police Department report obtained by local ABC affiliate WPLG.

Police say the victim, a 7-year-old girl, had been with Garcia all Saturday at the defendant’s apartment on Southwest 216th Street, near Cutler Bay, a midsize city about a half-hour drive away. Once the victim’s mother arrived, the defendant allegedly recounted the story of her fall, saying that the 7-year-old had repeatedly tried to perform the gymnastics move, but she kept falling and hitting her head. Garcia herself then suggested taking the girl to the hospital. The girl’s mother agreed.

Charges on Leonor Garcia

According to police in the Sunshine State, doctors diagnosed the girl with a severe brain bleed known as a subdural hematoma. The injury required surgery to drain fluid from the boy’s brain, police wrote in the report obtained by the television station. She also had a black eye, bruised shoulders, and swelling on the right side of her face.

Finally, she called the police to question the girl about what had happened to her. She called Garcia’s story about gymnastics a “lie” and alleged that she had, rather, been physically punished for her apparent lack of progress during language lessons.

The nanny had been teaching the girl, whose native language is Spanish, English on the day in question, the victim told police. And, according to the report, every time the 7-year-old mistranslated a word from Spanish to English, Garcia hit her. This abuse, the boy said, was inflicted in various ways. Sometimes, the girl alleges in the report, the babysitter would hit her over the head with a remote control, sometimes with a metal spoon, sometimes with a phone.

In summary, according to the report, the girl told police that Garcia hit her 13 times on Saturday. And, the girl allegedly said, the babysitter asked her to keep the abuse a secret. Police later interviewed Garcia, who reportedly denied the abuse allegations. The report says the nanny was unable to explain how the girl left her home with such injuries.

The defendant was arrested Monday, rushed to jail and almost as quickly granted and posted $7,500 bail after a hearing the same day as her arrest, court records show.
