A 65-year-old grandmother, identified as Maritza Yauger was arrested and charged with attempted murder and attempted murder after allegedly stabbing her seven-year-old granddaughter. However, friends and neighbors are confused as to what led to this attack. Eva Devers, 66, a friend of Yauger’s, said, according to the New York Post, “She adored that girl. I said, ‘No way!’ She loved that girl, she loved her so much.” Maria Castillo, a hairstylist, said Yauger brought her granddaughter to the salon to be pampered. “She adored her granddaughter. do you give everything?’ She says, ‘I have two sons. I don’t have a daughter. I loved my granddaughter. I give her everything,’” Castillo recalled as she spoke of Yauger.

While a store worker, Víctor Ramírez, explained: “When her mother died, she became, you know, different. Since then, she was not the same person. She was depressed, sad.” Adding to this, Castillo said that she “became calmer and looked different. She would laugh more before. When her mother passed away she changed”.

Yauger was charged following a psychological evaluation at St Barnabas Hospital, according to NY1. She remains hospitalized and faces charges of assault, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.
