Mark Wadsworth 62-year-old “distressed man” was fatally shot Friday by two Edgewater police officers when he pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at them, according to the department.

Officers responded to the 400 block of North Riverside Drive, where the homeowner and another person reported the man. He was identified as Mark Wadsworth and did not live there, but was known to the owner, according to a statement.

Mark Wadsworth shot and killed by police

Two Edgewater officers arrived and began talking to Wadsworth in the backyard. After a brief conversation, Wadsworth “quickly drew a pistol from his waistband and pointed it at the two officers.” “The two officers fired multiple shots from cover and ultimately incapacitated him. The officers then rendered assistance; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene,” the statement said.

The officers, identified as Sgt. Anthony Binz and Officer Melissa Cabrera were not injured during the shooting and “acted in accordance with their training.” The statement said: “It is important to note that after the aggression shown to these officers, they then provided first aid.”

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. “EPD is grateful that the officers were not harmed and we express our condolences to the family of those who died,” police said in the statement.Read More……
