A 33-year-old mother in New Mexico has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly killing her 7-year-old daughter by stabbing her multiple times inside her family home. Her mother, Maylene John, now faces a second-degree murder charge in the gruesome death of her little girl, prosecutors announced. The case falls under federal jurisdiction because John and her daughter were enrolled members of the Navajo Nation residing in non-profit Navajo housing.

According to court documents filed in the US District Court in New Mexico, officers with the Navajo Police Department responded to an emergency call around 3 a.m. m. on October 24, 2022 in reference to a child stabbed to death in the home John shared with her daughter. , identified in court documents as “Jane Doe,” and John’s brother, identified in court documents as “K.J.”

Arriving on scene, first responders said they found John in her bedroom covered in his daughter’s blood, with visible splatter on her face, lips, neck, ears and shirt, authorities wrote. Police removed John from the scene to allow Emergency Medical Services to attempt to resuscitate the girl, but she succumbed to her injuries and at 3:42 a.m. doctors pronounced her dead at the scene.

In an interview with investigators, John’s brother, K.J. He said that when he went to sleep the night before, nothing between John and his daughter seemed out of the ordinary. However, just before 3 a.m. m., he heard her niece yell for her for help from inside the room she shared with her mother. The door was locked, so he kicked it in and said he found the girl bleeding from a stab wound to her torso.

“John sat on the edge of the bed with a silver folding knife in his hand. KJ provided Jane Doe with a blanket to apply pressure to the wound,” the complaint states. “Jane Doe told K.J. that John had stabbed her. John put the knife to her own neck, at which point K.J. he grabbed her wrist, forcing her to drop the gun. KJ threw the knife on the floor, outside the bedroom door.”

After seeing his young niece’s injuries, John’s brother ran out of the house to a neighbor’s house and called for help.

John’s brother explained to police that his sister had a history of substance abuse, she had attended rehab several times in the past, and had been “society suicidal over the last ten years.” He said his sister had been recovering from drug use a few days before the fatal stabbing, but noted that she and her daughter were “interacting normally when he went to bed on the night of October 23, 2022.” ”.

The day after the stabbing, John allegedly told investigators that on October 23, he had been drinking alcohol and smoking methamphetamine during the day, but he couldn’t remember much else. She said she remembered photographing blood-covered hands, face, clothing and shoes during processing, but she “did not remember how or why [her daughter] was in her room” the night before.
