Fourniret was first arrested in 1966 for sexually assaulting a girl. While in jail for committing this crime, he met Oliver through a pen pal program. The criminal wrote her sexual fantasies about him and how he wanted to kill young virgins. Oliver then replied that she would “help” him fulfill those fantasies if she killed her husband, even though he never committed this murder. After Fourniret was released from prison in 1987, the duo began a relationship, and she began helping him in the murders.

He used her to trap some of his victims and check their hymens to see if they were virgins. Fourniret collapsed in his prison cell on November 20, 2020, just two weeks before police began digging for the remains of nine-year-old Estelle Mouzin, whom he raped and killed with the help of Oliver. Subsequently, he passed away on May 10, 2021 at the age of 79 after being admitted to the hospital with respiratory problems.

Fourniret was rushed from Fresnes prison to a secure unit at the Pitié Salpêtrière hospital in Paris on May 8, 2021 after “suffering from respiratory problems”, according to The Mirror. A source told the outlet at the time, he “suffers from heart problems and mental degeneration, has been put into a coma and doctors believe he cannot be resuscitated.”
