A missing 17-year-old girl was found dead, and now her mother is facing charges in North Carolina, authorities said. Oniesha Branch is charged with obstructing justice and covering up the facts in the murder case of her teenage daughter, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said February 21 in a news release.

The development comes more than a week after authorities said 27-year-old Monquette Douglas was charged with first-degree murder in the teen’s death. Police in their press release did not list attorney information for Douglas or Branch. The case dates from February 7, when the teenager Quameisha Branch disappeared. She was considered “missing and endangered” after she was last seen near downtown Roanoke Rapids, approximately 80 miles northeast of Raleigh.

Monquette Douglas accused of murder

Then, on February 10, officers searching an area along Old Highway Road in neighboring Northampton County found the body of Quameisha Branch. She “died of an apparent gunshot wound to the head,” police said at the time. “Based on our investigation, a murder warrant has been issued for the arrest of (Monquette) Douglas,” authorities wrote.

Douglas, a Garysburg resident, was believed to be “armed and dangerous” before turning himself in to Halifax County deputies. Officers said Douglas had been dating the teen’s mother. Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Bobby Martin told McClatchy News in an email that he was “not at liberty to discuss the role the mother played with respect to the integrity of the case.”

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with leads is asked to call police at 252-533-2810 or Crime Stoppers at 252-583-4444.
