A 27-year-old Utah woman Morgan Kay Harris and her dog were discovered dead on February 18 in a storage container after the woman’s boyfriend allegedly locked her inside and left, leaving her with no way to escape when a fire started. According to multiple sources, 30-year-old Alexander Wardell was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of kidnapping and negligent homicide.

Wardell had just been released when the fire started at a Murray CubeSmart Self Storage facility. Workers at a nearby car wash observed the start of the fire and called for help. Six storage containers were on fire when emergency personnel arrived, including the one holding the woman.

The woman, identified by authorities as Morgan Kay Harris, and her dog were found dead inside a unit. According to a worker who spoke to KSL-TV, surveillance of the car wash showed a man leaving the scene and “walking over the fence” shortly before the fire started.

Morgan Kay Harris cause of death

According to an affidavit, Wardell, who was arrested by police, admitted that Harris was his girlfriend and that he “locked the unit door by putting a padlock on the door.” It is still unclear if Wardell started the fire as the cause is still being investigated, according to PEOPLE.

According to ABC4, Wardell has a long history with the law. He already had multiple convictions for acts of domestic violence as of 2013. Wardell received a warrant from Salt Lake City police on February 16 for violating his probation, according to local news station KUTV. He posted $5,000 bail and was fired the next day.

In a statement released by Harris’s family, they expressed their devastation over the loss of her daughter. “Our daughter, Morgan Kay Harris, was always known for her sweet, shy and kind temperament, being a deep thinker with incredible artistic abilities and always with an infectious laugh. She was a beautiful model and makeup artist and a successful medical assistant. We are devastated by the loss of our daughter and we appreciate the love and support of the community, but we ask for your privacy at this time as we maneuver through the unimaginable.”

The family has set up a GoFundMe to help with her funeral expenses. The fundraising effort had received more than $16,000 in contributions as of February 23. “Thank you so much for her generosity and words of support from her,” Harris’s mother, Laurice Williamson, wrote. “Not having the stress of finances helps us deal with tragedy in a way.
