NEW YORK CITY: A Manhattan parking lot worker, who had originally been charged with attempted murder for shooting an armed robber, sobs as he was handcuffed to his hospital bed on Sunday, April 2, 2023. He was distraught over the result. “I got bullets in me and I’m handcuffed to a hospital bed, but I didn’t do anything wrong,” lamented Moussa Diarra, 57, according to Meyers Parking director of operations Michael Carolan.

Diarra sustained gunshot wounds twice during a fight with suspected robber Charles Rhodie at Carolan’s West 31st Street garage early Saturday morning, April 1, 2023, before shooting the suspect. As a result of having Rhodie’s gun at one point, police originally charged the Manhattan garage worker with criminal possession of a weapon. However, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office dropped the charges on Sunday. The allegations against Rhodie persist, including attempted murder, according to the New York Post.

Moussa Diarra accused of shooting a thief

New York City parking attendant Moussa Diarra was also charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the incident that occurred around 5:30 a.m. The attendant had seen a man on the second level of the West 31st Street garage in Manhattan looking into cars. Diarra took the man outside and questioned him about what was in his luggage as he suspected the man was stealing. The man then pointed a gun at Diarra, who tried to take the gun. The worker was shot in the stomach and suffered a scratch on his ear after the gun went off. He then pointed the gun at the suspected robber and shot him in the chest.

Charles Rhodie, 59, the alleged robber, was also charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of weapons. According to authorities, he was also accused of robbery. Diarra and Rhodie were taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition following Saturday’s incident in the parking lot.
