A cannabis-smoking man Oliver Mailey reportedly killed his newborn baby by viciously shaking him with force comparable to a car crash or falling off a tall building. Abel-Jax Mailey was just seven weeks old when his father, Oliver, allegedly inflicted fatal injuries on him at his home in Burnley, Lancashire, on November 28, 2021.

He initially claimed he found the baby limp and lifeless in his crib, before admit he had shaken the baby and pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He was arrested in June 2022 and was also charged with trying to cause serious harm to the baby, according to the Daily Mail.

Addressing court on Thursday January 12, prosecutor Timothy Cray KC pointed out that Oliver was in sole care of baby Mailey at his Burnley home after the baby’s mother, Mollie Gorton, left for work at 11:15am. A.M. Less than an hour after her departure, the seven-month-old suffered serious injuries and had to be rushed to hospital by ambulance. At the time, Oliver claimed that Mailey lost her strength while feeding him the bottle. During a call to emergency personnel, he explained that he had no idea what happened, but “it’s gone limp, it’s gone weird.”

Reflecting on Oliver’s claim, the prosecutor said: “The defendant’s initial story was that he had found Abel in his crib and that Abel appeared limp and lifeless. Oliver Mailey killed his own son

A medical examination later revealed that Mailey had suffered various traumatic injuries, including catastrophic brain damage, heavy bleeding, and tears in her eyes. Cray said the baby’s brain injury would have prevented it from breathing and deprived the brain of oxygen, leading to its death. He added that doctors agreed that the injuries were consistent with “forced and deliberate shaking.”

The prosecutor further clarified that the baby’s injuries were not caused accidentally and said they could only occur in other circumstances, such as a “car accident or a fall from a multi-story building.” “In the lead up to this trial, the defendant pleaded guilty to manslaughter. This defendant does not deny that he shook Abel on Sunday morning, that the tremor caused Abel’s death, and that his acts were illegal,” he added.

Cray also revealed that Oliver repeatedly questioned Gorton if he was the real father of the baby because “he knew his sperm count was pretty low.” “Another problem was that there was little money in the house, but both parents were regular cannabis users.
