After nearly four days of testimony, the jury deliberated for about 4 hours on March 31 before finding Rashan Jordan, 16, and Deondre Davis, 18, guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Stanley Freeman. Jr., 16, in a case of mistaken identity.

Jordan and Davis were 14 and 16 years old, respectively, on February 12, 2021, when prosecutors say Freeman was shot while driving home from Austin-East Magnet High School. Freeman, who was leaving school on her way to his job at McDonald’s, would have graduated last year.

Lawyers for the two teenagers argued that the evidence did not directly connect them to the crime and that eyewitness accounts were contradictory. But in the end, the jury found each defendant guilty of first degree murder, felony murder and aggravated child abuse.

Prosecutors relied heavily on DNA and cellphone evidence linking a rental car and multiple weapons to the shooting. Only one witness placed the defendants at the scene of the shooting, but he was killed in December 2022. The 16-year-old had testified as a hostile witness during a juvenile proceeding, and a recording of that testimony was played during his trial this week.

The boy testified that he was a friend of Freeman’s, saying, “he was great.” He also knew the two defendants, he said, adding that he had no problem with either of them. He said that he was walking home from school that afternoon when he saw the two defendants in a Nissan. “I said, ‘What’s up?’ And I kept going,” the teen said, adding that he continued walking toward his house before hearing gunshots a few minutes later and running from the area. He said he did not speak to Freeman, but testified that Freeman’s Honda was slightly behind the Nissan.
