BAKER, FLORIDA – Regina Short, 56, of Alabama, died after falling from her horse at a rodeo in Florida and was taken to a hospital, local authorities announced Sunday, January 8.

Short had just finished a barrel race at the Baker Arena Community Center on Saturday and was leaving the competition center via an exit ramp when her horse suddenly moved, throwing her abruptly, WEAR-TV reports.

According to Okaloosa Sheriff’s Department deputies, she fell and hit a pole and was taken to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Immediately after the incident, authorities did not release Short’s name. They only said that she was a 56 year old female from out of state.

Regina Short died after falling from her horse

Fellow jockeys identified her when they began posting condolences from her on Facebook. Abigail McClellan shared her condolences to the Short family on the National Barrel Horse Association’s Florida District 07 Facebook page saying, “First of all, our deepest condolences and continued prayers to the family and friends of Regina Short as they go through this unexpected loss. There are no words to adequately address all of this, but we trust that God knows our hearts and hears our prayers.

We have been made aware of Regina’s beloved daughter, Christen, who preceded her in passing. We hope you had the happiest meeting today.” she added. Many others also posted their condolences on Facebook and offered her prayers, including the Covington Equine Association, which posted a tribute to Short and revealed that she was a board member. The competition was canceled due to the incident and will be rescheduled for a future date, McClellan said.

According to the event’s website, it’s part of the National Barrel Horse Association’s tour of rodeos across the country. Although accidents of such a nature are rare, this is not the first time an incident like this has occurred. Read More….
