A Florida man fatally shot a pregnant woman and her unborn baby before turning the gun and killing himself Friday in a home-related double murder-suicide, authorities said. Riley Groover, 26, shot the woman multiple times around 7 p.m. before she fatally shot herself in front of several witnesses outside her home in the Inwood area of Winter Haven, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

First responders on scene and hospital medical staff were unable to save the unborn baby. “This was a horrific and violent double murder that took the life of a 21-year-old woman who was 8 months pregnant and her unborn child,” Sheriff Grady Judd said in a written statement.

When the suspect became enraged, her relatives and neighbors did everything they could to help her get away from him. Please keep this family in your prayers,” the sheriff continued. Groover was seen running out of the home after the pregnant woman and yelling, “I’m going to kill you,” a neighbor who witnessed the shooting told WFTS-TV. Family members told investigators the couple had arguments that turned physical in the past.

However, none of those incidents were reported to police, the sheriff’s office said. Groover had prior arrests for aggravated assault and domestic violence.
