A Scottish man has been found dead on holiday in Lanzarote after failing to board a flight home with his friend. Robert Campbell, 44, was enjoying his first holiday abroad on the Canary Island when he disappeared when he was due to fly home on Thursday last week.

Shortly before the flight, Mr. Campbell fell ill and was taken to hospital. But after being examined, the Scotsman was deemed well enough to fly home. Campbell was then separated from his friend Paddy at the airport shortly before the flight and could not be contacted, it was reported.

Robert Campbell found dead

Fearing for his loved one, Mr. Campbell’s family made appeals to help locate him when two of them flew to the island’s capital, Las Palmas, to find him. His sister, Margueritte Devine, confirmed the tragic news that her brother was found dead on Tuesday.

The family have launched a GoFundMe page to help cover some of the costs of bringing Mr Campbell’s body to Uddington, South Lanarkshire, and to pay for his funeral.

Ms Devine wrote: ‘Unfortunately our brother died yesterday on Lanzarote and we were left with a bill of £6 and £10,000 in funeral expenses. “We are desperate to get him home as soon as possible, so I am writing this to reach out from my heart and help us bring him home.” Tributes have been paid to the Scotsman on social media with friends and family calling him “one of the best”.

One user, sharing the GoFundMe page, wrote: ‘Could you all share this and help us get our Uncle Rab home as soon as possible where he belongs?’ She added: “One of our family and friends flew to Lanzarote to find him and bring him home, but unfortunately they were too late so we are all heartbroken, devastated and shocked.”

Sharing photos of Mr Campbell, another wrote: ‘Gutted to hear the passing of our uncle, who was reported missing in Lanzarote, he was found dead. First time I go on vacation and I don’t come back.
