This incident occurred on Thursday after 7 a.m. close to Lily Street and White Horse Road. The mother had been walking her children to school.

Charges on Robert Daniel Mistretta

“Deputies received information that the male, later identified as Mistretta, approached the family and grabbed the girl before attempting to pull her away,” the sheriff’s office said. “Fortunately, the mother was able to control the child and walk to safety without injury.” Law enforcement officers scoured the area. They found Mistretta and matched him to the suspect’s description, they said. Not only that, but he was allegedly found out with the girl’s student ID. He—had torn it from his cord during the fight.

Deputies took him to the Greenville County Detention Center to await a bond hearing on kidnapping and petty theft charges. The judge reportedly denied Misretta’s bail. Kidnapping is a violent crime and she was already out on bail, according to WYFF. Local records show that he was charged May 1 with indecent exposure. He has no registered attorney in that matter. The court simply describes it as pro se.

“Everything is safe at the school,” Beth Farmer, principal at Westcliffe Elementary School, said in an alert to parents, according to WYFF. “I want to inform you about an incident that occurred off campus this morning. As a father walked his son to school, a man came up and tried to grab the boy. Fortunately, the father was able to intervene and keep the boy safe. Police were immediately notified and have the suspect in custody. While this occurred off campus, we want to make sure you are aware of what happened and remind parents to be vigilant while on the way to school.
