A 36-year-old mother in Alabama was arrested last week for allegedly killing her 7-year-old son by shooting him multiple times inside her home. Shannon Renee Karr was arrested Friday and charged with one count of capital murder in the boy’s slaying, records reviewed by Law & Crime show.

According to a report by NBC affiliate WAFF in Huntsville, Alabama, Moulton Police Department officers responded to a call about a possible shooting at a home located in the 200 block of Main Street around 2:17 a.m. m. of August 4. Upon arriving on scene, first responders said they made contact with an adult female, later identified as Karr, the victim’s mother, who was outside the home. She reportedly told officers that a child was dead inside the home.

The boy was located inside the home with two gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, Lawrence County Coroner Steve Norwood reportedly confirmed to Hunstville ABC affiliate WAAY-TV. Authorities have not released the boy’s identity, but the station reported that he was a student at Danville Elementary School in Morgan County.

Charges on Shannon Renee Karr

Karr was arrested at her home. Authorities transported her to the Lawrence County Jail, where she was booked on suspicion of capital murder. She is currently being held without bail, records show. Susan Thrasher, one of Karr’s neighbors, told WAFF that the allegations against Karr are unimaginable. “It’s just been a sad day because it’s hard to believe that a mother could kill her child,” Thrasher told the station. “I just can’t imagine what led her to do such a thing and I just hope the little boy was asleep.”

Tad Hazle, a second neighbor, told the station that the entire ordeal was “shocking.” “I have seen the boy several times, he was playing with my dogs and riding his bike on the sidewalk,” Hazle said. “It’s terrible, just terrible.” Moulton Police Department Capt. Russell Graham said the two gunshot wounds the boy suffered were at “close range”, the WAFF reported. He also spoke to the station about the disturbing nature of the crime, particularly since he has children of his own.

“It’s not easy, any death is bad, but especially when it’s a young child,” Graham told the station. “I have kids of my own that are around that age, so it’s a bit difficult, but I’m trying to put that aside at the moment and just look at this from a purely investigative point of view.” A third neighbor who spoke to WAAY on condition of anonymity said he would see the boy in the area often, but said he mostly kept to himself.

“I saw him every day playing on his scooter. He was a cute and very calm boy. He never talked to us, but he played a lot on the side of the street. This is a very quiet neighborhood and when I woke up this morning and found out what happened, I was totally shocked.” Karr made her initial court appearance Friday morning and is scheduled to appear at her preliminary hearing on Aug. 23.Read More….
