Bowling Green State University paid out about $3 million to the family of a student who sadly died of binge drinking at a fraternity event. Stone Foltz, 20, a sophomore business student at Ohio University, died at a hospital in March 2021, three days after he was allegedly forced to drink 40 drinks while pledging Pi Kappa Alpha’s Delta Beta chapter Blindfolded.

Foltz participated in the ritual Thursday night and was then dropped off at this apartment between 11 and 11:30 p.m. m. in a very drunk and sick state. He was placed on life support and died after his family braced for organ donation, the Daily Mail reported. His parents, Cory and Shari, have set up a foundation and stated they will work with the university to combat hazing on university campuses during a joint announcement of the agreement on Monday, January 23.

According to court documents, the settlement with Bowling Green State University adds to more than $7 million in compensation made to the family by the fraternity and individuals involved. The settlement was described as “the largest payment by a public university in a hazing case in Ohio history” by the Foltz family attorney, CBS affiliate WBNS-TV reported.

Stone Foltz cause of death

Foltz, of Delaware, Ohio, was discovered unconscious after members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity dropped him off at his residence. He died after being on life support for three days. Eight former members of the fraternity have pleaded guilty or been found guilty to a variety of charges, including reckless homicide, hazing and giving alcohol to a minor.

Two of the eight defendants were acquitted last year on more serious charges, including manslaughter. Foltz was not required or required to drink the entire bottle, according to his defense attorneys, and decided to do so at his own expense.

Foltz’s parents claimed in his wrongful death case that despite being aware of hazing in fraternities and sororities, the institution did nothing to stop it. He called the defendants’ actions “totally intolerable in a civilized society” and explained how the pledges were reportedly dragged into a basement blindfolded and forced to drink a full bottle of alcohol each.

According to the lawsuit, Stone was brought to his apartment and left on the couch unattended after being forced to consume the bottle, which is equivalent to 40 drinks.
