A New Mexico father William Brown and his teenage son have been arrested after the 14-year-old shot and killed a 13-year-old girl using one of her father’s weapons on Friday, state authorities alleged. The teen pointed the gun at the girl and then fired shots as a group of four minors hung out and listened to music inside the boy’s home in Questa around 2:30 p.m., the New Mexico Department of Public Safety said in a press release.

After the girl was fatally injured, the teen dragged her body out of it and back inside, authorities said. Shortly after the shooting, the 14-year-old’s father, William Brown, also returned home.

Charges on William Brown

The 39-year-old man and his son refused to leave for 30 minutes during a standoff with state police, the department said. The teen, who was not identified by authorities, was charged with one open count of first-degree murder and two counts of evidence tampering.

He also faces two charges of assault on a police officer, though the public safety department did not elaborate on what led to those charges. Meanwhile, Brown was charged with negligently making a firearm accessible to a minor, resulting in death from alleged possession of weapons inside the home, police said.

Both were booked into separate detention centers, with the 14-year-old going to a juvenile facility. “I am saddened by the tragedy that occurred yesterday,” Questa Village Mayor John Anthony Ortega said in a Facebook post. “My thoughts and prayers are with the families, community members and first responders who have been affected by this.”

The victim’s name was withheld out of respect for his family, the public security department said. The incident remains under investigation and the information is expected to be turned over to the district attorney’s office, state officials said.Read More…….
