A grieving man remembered his sister after her life was cut short during an alcohol-induced car accident that also claimed the life of their unborn child. Adriana Sylmetaj reportedly died after her drunken boyfriend, Adem Nikeziq, crashed his white Dodge sedan into a barrier wall and a utility pole on Hylan Boulevard near Rose Ave in New Dorp early Saturday, January 28. January.

The accident was so severe that it reportedly left the SUV in three pieces while the 23-year-old mother-to-be was thrown from it. However, Nikeziq, 30, survived with minor injuries. She now faces several charges, including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, driving while intoxicated, and assault.

Sylmetaj and Nikeziq would have become the parents of a girl in April. Her brother, Al, told the NY Daily News: “She was excited when she found out she was going to be a mother. It was something new to her. She couldn’t wait to see the baby born. They were thinking of names, but I don’t think they made any decisions. … They were planning a baby shower.”

Nikeziq reportedly had a criminal record as he was arrested in 2017 for drunk driving and driving with a revoked license. On the other hand, two years later, in 2019, he drove with a revoked license and when the police tried to handcuff him, he defended himself.

Al reportedly expressed that he did not like Nikeziq, who most of the time seemed to be intoxicated as he struggled to cope with the loss of his father. The brother commented, “I had a feeling that the outcome was going to be this way. Every time he showed up, he was under the influence, not that it was uncontrollable, but how he articulated. He always asked me if he wanted to go for a drink. My birthday had just passed and he was asking me out for a drink, but I said no thanks.”

Sylmetaj was a veterinary technician by profession. An anonymous friend of hers reportedly said: “She was perfect. That is. There’s nothing you can say. It’s just a fucking way to die. She didn’t deserve that and neither did the baby… There’s nothing I can say that she can fix that and there’s nothing I can say that she can change that.”

Al said: “She loved life, man, always happy, always outgoing. The whole family was waiting for the baby. My two children: I have a 5 and 6 year old son and to have another baby, we were waiting and longing for it. He is a tough man. I keep thinking it’s like I’m gonna wake up from this thing. Like I couldn’t believe it. He hasn’t settled in yet.”

According to Al, Nikeziq didn’t seem happy about the idea of a baby being born. He told the publication: “I don’t think he was ready to have a child. I didn’t see it. As if he wasn’t ready for it. You know when you expect to be a parent. …He wouldn’t get behind the wheel intoxicated like that. You have to think a bit.

Al also alleged that Nikeziq seemed manipulative to him and the family. He added: “I couldn’t really identify it. I didn’t know if he should be worried and I was leaning more towards the worried side. When she says that she’s happy, that she loves him, I took her at her word and said, she’s fine.
