A woman found dead in a Hampshire cemetery was allegedly murdered by her ex-husband near the grave of their late teenage son. The violent death of 71-year-old Ann Blackwood, who was described as kind-hearted, has stunned the prosperous seaside town of Lee-on-the-Solent.

Now it was learned that her alleged murderer was the boating enthusiast Martin Suter, to whom she was married. The couple’s marriage ended with the untimely death of their son Christopher, just 16, in 2003. The alleged murder took place last Monday July 24, the same date Christopher was born in 1987. Suter, 66, lived less than a mile from his ex in an £800,000 house overlooking The Solent, a popular area with boating enthusiasts.

Suter, a former Green candidate for local council, had been divorced from Ann for more than 20 years, since before her son’s death, and had since remarried, but remained in the same area. The house he shared with his second wife is a 15-minute walk from where his ex lived with his 33-year-old daughter Helen. Suter, a prominent member of St. Faith’s Church in the city, was arrested when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates Court.

He only spoke to confirm his name and date of birth. He is due to appear in Winchester Crown Court today. Mrs Blackwood was found in the isolated Crofton Cemetery in Stubbington, Hampshire, on Monday. She was treated by paramedics at the scene, but she died shortly after police were called to the area.

A tribute posted on a website by Ms Blackwood to her son who died a fortnight short of his 17th birthday a decade later read: “It’s been 10 years since we suddenly lost a wonderful son and brother.” I miss you so much Chris, I always think of you. Love, Mom and Helen XX. Ms Blackwood’s distraught family paid tribute to the “loving, caring and good-hearted” moh. They said that she had enjoyed playing tennis, sailing and biking at her retreat.

The statement read: “Her daughter, her brothers, her family and all of her friends are absolutely devastated by the loss of Ann Blackwood. “A loving, caring and caring mother and friend who was very popular in her local community, she enjoyed her retirement with an active lifestyle that included tennis, sailing, cycling and music.”

Mr. Suter has worked in the oil and gas industry with a specialization in metallurgy and materials. A member of the Green Party since 1986, he stood three times in local elections for the East Bramhall constituency near Stockport and last year stood as the Green candidate in the Gosport City Council election, finishing fourth with 331 votes.

Ms Blackwood’s death shocked the local community. Christopher Suter was found dead by his mother at his home in Lee on Solent in 2003. An inquest heard that Ann Blackwell returned home from work to make the grim discovery.
