A Tennessee surgeon was fatally shot Tuesday by a patient who waited at the clinic for “several hours” before carrying out the targeted attack, police said. Dr. Benjamin Mauck was killed in an exam room by an unidentified gunman at Campbell Clinic Orthopedics in Collierville, a city about 30 miles west of Memphis.

The shooter fired the gun and ran out of the clinic, where he was taken into custody by police without incident just five minutes after killing Mauck. Lane said the man, whose identity and age have not yet been released, was found carrying a firearm and was taken into custody.

He worked as a hand surgeon at Campbell Clinic Orthopedics and was also director of the Congenital Hand Clinic at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. According to the clinic’s website, Mauck specialized in elbow, hand and wrist surgery.
