A former pastor has been arrested in the decades-long cold case of the murder of an 8-year-old girl in Pennsylvania after he admitted to kidnapping and killing the girl while on her way to Bible camp, authorities said. David Zandstra, 83, allegedly pulled up next to Gretchen Harrington in her green pickup truck on Aug. 15, 1975, and offered to give her a ride, according to the Delaware County district attorney’s office.

The evil pastor told investigators that he then took the girl to a secluded spot from her where he told her to take her clothes off and then beat her to death when she refused. The pastor, who was a family acquaintance, said he returned to church after the murder.

“David Zandstra is a monster. He is every parent’s worst nightmare,” Delco District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said during a press conference Monday, according to NBCPhiladelphia. “He killed this poor 8-year-old girl that he knew and trusted him. And then he acted like he was a friend of the family, not just during her funeral and afterward, but for years.” Gretchen’s skeletal remains were discovered weeks later in Ridley Creek State Park, more than seven miles from her home.

Investigators interviewed a woman in January who claimed to be the best friend of Zandstra’s daughter. She alleged that Zandstra groped her during a sleepover at her house when she was 10 years old. After detectives confronted the pastor with the sexual assault allegations, he admitted to kidnapping and murdering Gretchen.

Zandstra, who now lives in Georgia, has been charged with criminal manslaughter, first-, second- and third-degree murder, as well as kidnapping of a minor and possession of a criminal instrument. The family of the murdered girl issued a statement saying they were “extremely hopeful” that the person responsible is held to account.
