Tafari Campbell Wiki – Tafari Campbell Biography

The former White House sous chef for Barack and Michelle Obama has been identified as the man found dead after a paddle boarding accident near the couple’s Martha’s Vineyard property. Tafari Campbell s body was recovered Monday by divers after disappearing in the pond behind Barack Obama’s sprawling $12 million estate.

The 45-year-old man disappeared Sunday night while out with another rower on Edgartown Great Pond, Massachusetts, and emergency crews were dispatched to Obama’s residence. In a statement, Michelle and Barack Obama said that Campbell, who was married with 19-year-old twins, was one of the top chefs in the White House kitchen: “Tafari was a beloved part of our family.

“When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House: creative and passionate about food and his ability to bring people together. In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, funny and extraordinarily kind person who made our lives a little bit brighter.” So as we prepared to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He has been a part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he is gone.”

Campbell’s family told the South Florida Sun Sentinel in 2009 that he had always shown an interest in cooking and that he often made something when his extended family came to visit. He graduated from culinary school in Virginia and owned his own restaurant for a brief time before applying for a White House job. The sous chef was eventually hired under the George W. Bush administration, and he was one of four White House cooks asked to stay on under Obama.

How Tafari Campbell died?

During Obama’s presidency, Campbell became known for brewing the White House Honey Ale, using honey from Michell Obama’s South Lawn garden. “I immediately thought of the African Americans brewing for Washington and Jefferson, and was pleased to see the historical arc unfold through the foam,” historian Adrian Miller writes of Campbell in his book The President’s Kitchen Cabinet: The Story of the African Americans Who Have Fed Our First Families, from the Washingtons to the Obamas.

The photos Campbell posted online of his life often showed his wife, Sherise, and her food concoctions. In a 2017 post, Campbell and Sherise could be seen in the ocean in Aruba. He captioned that photo #stillcantswim. Following the news of Campbell’s untimely death on Monday, Sherise shared a photo of her husband on Instagram and said she was “heartbroken.”

Edgartown Meat and Fish Market staff also paid tribute to the chef, whom they remembered as a “wonderful guy.” “We saw him last week, he was such a nice happy guy,” a staff member told DailyMail.com. ‘He didn’t seem to live here, but he would be here a lot in the summer and fall, and he would buy various things.

“He was nice and calm, it’s horrible to hear what happened to him.” The clerk added that Campbell “had been coming here for a few years.” “When he would come in, he would talk to us about what he was cooking,” the staff member said. “One of the things that he would always ask for in a special way is juice: orange juice and strawberry lemonade.” Campbell visited Martha’s Vineyard several times and golfed several times at the nearby Farm Neck Golf Club.

Witnesses first told police Sunday night that a man, later identified as Campbell, went underwater and then briefly reappeared as he struggled to stay afloat, before going back under around 7:46 p.m. The witness, who was not identified, was paddling on the Edgartown Great Pond with Campbell. A massive joint agency search was launched when a 911 call was made from the Obamas’ Martha’s Vineyard home on Turkeyland Cove Road. The former president and first lady were not at the residence at the time.

The dispatch call read: ‘Edgartown Fire and Water Rescuers, Turkeyland Cove Road. For a 40-year-old man, possible drowning. After the call, Edgartown Fire Department Chief Alex Schaeffer told the Vineyard Gazette that island police and firefighters conducted door-to-door searches. Firefighters also searched the shoreline of the pond on foot.

Search efforts resumed Monday morning for the revered chef who was last seen dressed in black without a life jacket. Her paddle board and hat were recovered Sunday, and her body was found around 10 a.m. Monday in eight-foot-deep water about 100 feet offshore. In a statement Monday, the Massachusetts State Police said: “Shortly before 10 a.m., the body of the missing paddle boarder was recovered from Edgartown Great Pond by divers from the Massachusetts State Police.

The investigation into the man’s death is being conducted by state police with the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office and Edgartown police.

The rescue mission was just yards from former President Obama’s seven-bedroom Massachusetts home, a 6,892-square-foot mansion right on the water. He bought the Martha’s Vineyard home in 2019 for $11.75 million. The massive property was previously owned by Boston Celtics owner Wycliffe Grousbeck.
