An Indiana mother of three said she came home to find her three children unconscious after their 24-year-old babysitter had allegedly taught them “how to inhale pills,” authorities said. Deana Nicole Byrd was arrested Wednesday and charged with three counts of clerk neglect resulting in grievous bodily injury, handling of a controlled substance under favorable circumstances and one count of theft, court documents reviewed by Law & Crime show.

According to a probable cause statement, Evansville Police Department officers and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to a home at around 5:21 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Althaus Avenue on a call about three children in need of medical assistance. The person she called said that she had just arrived at the house of the babysitter who was caring for her children, ages 8, 9 and 15, and found them unconscious.

The children were hospitalized and have recovered. Doctors revived the two youngest children. When they regained consciousness, both children “were tripping and falling trying to get into the ambulance.” The 15-year-old was unconscious when she was loaded into an ambulance. One of the younger children allegedly told an officer that Byrd, her babysitter, had given them some of her pills.

Charges on Deana Nicole Byrd

The boys’ mother told police she had dropped them off at the Byrd home around 10:30 p.m. the night before and she told Byrd that she would be back to pick them up around 5 p.m. m. the next day when she left work. She said she hadn’t heard from the children or Byrd all day. When she arrived at the house, Byrd was alone on the front porch, apparently “run down” and “talking very softly.”

The mother said that she was nervous when she entered the house and did not listen to the children. She then ran upstairs, where she found her 15-year-old daughter unconscious in Byrd’s bedroom and called 911, according to the document. Her other two children were unconscious on the sofa downstairs, getting only a mild response after shaking each of them, police said.

When she confronted Byrd and told him that she had called 911, Byrd allegedly said that she “wasn’t going to go to jail for not having children.” When the 15-year-old woke up in the hospital, she told police that Byrd had offered her and her siblings pills of hers that she believed to be Klonopin, Adderall and Lyrica. She said she never asked for the pills and Byrd offered them to her spontaneously, authorities said.

She “she” Said Byrd showed her how to break open the orange pill capsules and line them up to inhale. The 15-year-old said Byrd showed them how to inhale pills using a rolled-up lid from a cup of Ramen noodles. She said that she and her siblings took about 3-4 of each of the three different pills that Byrd had given them,” the affidavit reads. “The 15-year-old said that after the pills took effect, she and her siblings began to fall and could barely stand up. She said that she remembered seeing her brothers fall and that she remembered throwing up at one point and then walking out of the bathroom and falling again.”

A child services worker told police that the two younger brothers’ stories matched the 15-year-old’s account. The worker also noted that they were familiar with Byrd, as “DCS had previously removed all three of her children.” When questioned by police, Byrd allegedly claimed that the three children, one of whom she refers to as “a jerk”, must have taken her pills at her expense, saying that she never gave them anything. She added that children like to snoop around when they are given free rein in your home. She also denied that either of the two young children was ever unconscious.

At Byrd’s home, investigators said they found a bottle of prescription pills for Adderall and Klonopin. As she was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail, police said they found a half-filled bottle of Lyrica in Byrd’s bag, containing orange capsules that matched the broken ones found at her home. Byrd’s bail was set at $20,000 and she was ordered to have no contact with any of the three children.Read More……
