Johnny Johnson killed a 6-year-old girl
Johnson, a drifter and ex-con, was 24 when he killed Casey. They reportedly invited him to spend the night on the couch at a house on Benton Street in Valley Park where Casey’s father was staying. Johnson lured Casey out of the house, down the street and into a maze of tunnels, old furnaces, and subterranean rooms of an abandoned glassworks.
Johnson later confessed to police that Casey was killed with bricks and a heavy rock after she resisted his sexual advances. Dr. John Rabun said Johnson had suffered from mental illness since he was 13 years old and was suicidal. The initial diagnosis was depression but she was later diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, an illness similar to schizophrenia. Beverly Biemdiek, his defense attorney, asked the jury to convict him of the lesser charge of second-degree murder during his trial. She claimed that mental illness prevented Johnson from cool deliberation.
