A man who stabbed two girls, killed one and then pretended to be mentally ill until he realized he couldn’t fool forensic psychologists, has been jailed for at least 26 years. Kristian Kovaleff , 21, pleaded guilty to murder and battery with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The two 17-year-old girls he stabbed, one who survived the December 2020 attack inside a Parramatta Meriton hotel room while celebrating the other’s 18th birthday, cannot be identified. Judge Stephen Rothman sentenced Kovaleff to at least 26 years in prison at the New South Wales supreme court on Thursday.

Kovaleff had feigned mental illness and the judge believed that he told the court what he thought he wanted to hear during his sentencing. “I don’t accept, even on the lowest level, the balance of probability, the expression of remorse for his conduct,” Rothman said. Kovaleff planned to kill one of the girls in a Campbelltown motel the week before, but told the court he didn’t have the “guts” and knew he could “get [himself] excited by watching Ted Bundy.”

Kristian Kovaleff charged with double murder

Rothman said Kovaleff decided to wait a week and kill the two girls after learning of his plans to spend a night together at the Meriton. “The planning for one murder was deliberately expanded to two murders,” he said. Rothman said the slain girl could have survived if she had received immediate medical treatment. Kovaleff’s public defender, Tony Evers, said the duct tape was brought in “partly to silence the screaming,” but the bandage showed he was remorseful after stabbing the two girls.

“He took steps … to try to treat [the injured girl],” Evers said at a pre-sentence hearing in February. Rothman disagreed. “The offender clarified that he had wrapped the injured victim in clothing and duct tape to keep her alive so he could have sexual intercourse with her,” Rothman said Thursday.

Kovaleff eventually called an ambulance, but hung up. When they called back, he told the operator someone else attacked “one person dead and one person bleeding to death inside room 111.” He admitted that his desire to have sex with the injured girl and then kill her were “maybe not” unrelated impulses in February.

He survived, after vomiting blood and spending eight days in the hospital. The sisters of the slain girl told the court in February about the impact the “ruthless” murder has had on her family. One of her had to translate for her parents the news that two policemen gave her in the middle of the night that her sister had been stabbed.

Rothman said the loss of the family was “indescribably horrible”, as were the injuries inflicted by Kovaleff.
