Police are still searching for a New Jersey elementary school teacher who went missing in early June without explanation. Lara Emanuele, 46, was last seen June 7 and her car was found abandoned June 8 in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn Express in Roxbury, New Jersey, about five miles from her home, she told the PEOPLE the Morris County District Attorney’s Office.

Emanuele is a third grade teacher at Alexander Hamilton Elementary School in Morristown, New Jersey. She is 5 feet 6 inches tall, she is a redhead and weighs around 125 pounds, according to News 12 New Jersey. The outlet reported that Emanuele had a restraining order against her husband Brian, but she recently lifted it. Morris County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Meghan Knab recently told PEOPLE: “This is still a missing persons investigation.”

Lara Emanuele went missing

“At this time, this is not considered a suspicious disappearance,” Knab said. “We will notify the public if the focus [or] the status of the investigation changes.” On Facebook, Emanuele’s husband posted information from the county attorney’s office asking the community for information that he could help find his wife.

The daily search for Emanuele has been underway since last Thursday when her abandoned vehicle was discovered, Knab says. The coordinated search focused primarily on a “heavily wooded” wildlife area just behind the hotel where she was found in her car, the prosecutor’s office said in a June 12 press release. The office said it is working with the Roxbury Police Department, Morris County Sheriff’s Office, New Jersey State Police Office of Aviation and New Jersey Search and Rescue to search for the missing teacher.

I would like to assure the public that all capabilities available to law enforcement are being used to locate Lara,” Morris County Attorney Robert J. Carroll said in a statement. “We understand the concerns of the public and will do our best to update the community whenever possible.”

The search has focused on the Berkshire Valley State Wildlife Management Area, which includes 2,030 acres of wetlands and mixed upland hardwood forest with no marked trails, according to her website. Carroll asked the public to refrain from taking their own liberties to search for Emanuele in the wildlife area because “the search area is made up of heavily wooded terrain and there are areas that may have dangerous wildlife.”

The county attorney also said that K-9 units are being used to search for Emanuele and that local police are making “relentless efforts” to find the missing teacher.
