Matthew Jacob Mendoza accused of killing a man

Mendoza and his friend allegedly saw Hernandez approaching, court documents say. An altercation ensued, and Hernandez ended up unresponsive in the driveway. They called the police and took him to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. According to the El Paso Police Department, Mendoza acknowledged that there was a fight between them that night and he had blood on both sides of his face.

At that time, a medical examiner determined that the victim’s injuries from the fight were not fatal and that his death was not a homicide, so EPPD dropped the case, according to local CBS affiliate KDBC.

However, according to the indictment, the fight is alleged to have taken an unfair turn at some point: Hernandez was allegedly struck with a lock on the steering wheel, ultimately killing him. The defendant is currently being held at the El Paso County Detention Center on $75,000 bond.
