Michelle Yeoh Wiki – Michelle Yeoh Biography

Michelle Yeoh is making history once again. The Everything Everywhere All at Once star, 60, who earned her first Best Actress Oscar nomination on Tuesday, also earned special distinction as the first actress of Asian descent to do so.

Yeoh told Deadline after the Oscar nomination news: “I think what it means to me is for all those Asians to say, ‘See, it’s possible. If she can do it, I can do it too.'” That is the most important. I am very common. I just work really hard. There are so many brilliant actresses, actors who know they have a seat at the table. All they have to do is find an opportunity and go there.”

The Malaysian-born actress, considered a favorite for Best Actress at the upcoming Academy Awards for her portrayal of Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once, told TIME last month that she has “thought about” the fact that that no Asian woman has ever won Best Actress at the Oscars, adding, “And it’s not just me, I feel like my entire Asian community has thought about it.” “They come up to me and say, ‘You’re doing it for us,'” Yeoh told TIME.

The Academy Awards have been criticized in the past for nominating primarily white actors. This year, however, several Asian actors received Academy Award nominations, including Yeoh’s co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, as well as Hong Chau for The Whale. This marks the largest number of Asian nominees recognized by the academy in its history, according to Variety.
