The man who allegedly murdered two students and a school caretaker during a knife attack in Nottingham can today be named as a 31-year-old engineering graduate of the University of Nottingham. Valdo Calocane believed to be from West Africa, graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering last summer, according to a brochure about the ceremony posted online.

Valdo Calocane accused of killing three people

He was arrested at 5:40 am Tuesday on suspicion of murdering Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19-year-old freshmen at the University of Nottingham.

The knife attack marked the start of a 90-minute spree that also stabbed school janitor Ian Coates, 65, to death and ran over three pedestrians, one of whom remains seriously ill and was identified today as factory worker Wayne Birkett.

Nottinghamshire police, who were given a further 36 hours to question the suspect yesterday, do not believe the fact that he graduated from the same university they attended is relevant to the attacks.

Today, Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the man in custody was a former Nottingham University student, but said: “At this time, he is not believed to be connected to the attack.”

The force has said the man they have in custody is the same person who was seen entering an assisted living complex on Mapperley Road. CCTV showed that a man dressed in black arrived at the Seely Hirst House property at 5am. on Tuesday, about a half hour before his arrest.Read More,,,,,,,,,
