Police in Evansville, Indiana, said Friday that a 25-year-old man opened fire Thursday night at a Walmart store where he once worked, injuring at least one person before dying in a shootout with police. Officer Taylor Merriss said an employee was injured in the shooting. Police did not immediately release the victim’s name or age or the extent of her injuries, but the Evansville Courier & Press reported that Merriss said she “was able to speak of her when she was removed from the scene.”

The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department and deputies responded to a report of an active shooter at the store around 10 p.m. local time on Thursday. “Threat has been neutralized and he is in custody,” police tweeted at 10:14 p.m. “There were several officers looking for the offender. And he could turn the corner at any moment,” Merriss explained, describing the body camera footage as “creepy.”

“When officers entered, they were trying to locate the suspect and he was all over the store. He was shooting at officers and moving around. So he was not contained to one area inside,” Gray said, adding that police did not . know immediately how many people were shot and that there might be additional victims who had fled the scene.

“We’ve been taught that if there’s an active threat, we go in, we don’t stop, we don’t take the time to try to figure out what’s going on. We go in and go where shots are being fired,” she previously said.

Other victims reportedly fled the store as police arrived on the scene. Police encouraged victims who may have been injured to go to the hospital. Gray has also asked witnesses to come forward with information that would help her investigation. “A lot of people were running away,” she said Thursday. “We ask that any witnesses call if they have information.”

“The entire Walmart family is shocked by the senseless violence that occurred at our Evansville store, and our hearts go out to our associate at this time,” Walmart said in a statement. “As we learn more, we will do everything we can to support our associates as they deal with this tragedy.”Read More….
