A man led police on a frantic chase Saturday after he stole multiple vehicles, including an ambulance, while causing at least 13 hit-and-runs in the Washington, D.C. area, Virginia State Police said.A compilation of traffic camera footage from Twitter user Dave Statter captured much of the chaos, including the suspect weaving in and out of traffic and bulldozing cars to get away.

The incident unfolded around 3:40 p.m. as Virginia State Police responded to a hit-and-run accident in the eastbound lanes of I-66 involving a truck that was stolen from Falls Church, Virginia, the troops wrote in a Facebook post. The truck caused another crash a minute later in the northbound lanes of I-395 near exit 10 in Arlington County.

Charges on Darell Caldwell

The suspect, later identified as Darell T. Caldwell, 30, of Brandywine, Md., fled on foot, stole another truck and began driving the wrong way on George Washington Parkway, causing a third accident, authorities said. .

An ambulance responded to the scene on George Washington Parkway, and paramedics exited the platform to assist one of the drivers. That’s when Caldwell got into the ambulance and drove off, according to the soldiers. The doctors signaled to the soldiers to tell them that Caldwell had stolen the ambulance. When a police officer caught up with the ambulance, Caldwell continued driving and a chase ensued, police said.

“At one point, the ambulance pulled up on the highway. As the trooper was exiting his patrol, Caldwell put the ambulance in reverse and rammed the state police vehicle and fled the scene,” the troopers wrote. Cops continued to pursue Caldwell along with the Arlington County Police Department as he entered the express lanes of I-395 and then entered Washington, D.C., where he head-on into a parked vehicle. Caldwell was then taken into custody without further incident and taken to hospital for treatment.

“During the course of the chase, the stolen ambulance collided with several vehicles and again collided with the patrol car. At this time, State Police have reported and are investigating 13 hit-and-runs committed by the stolen ambulance,” the officers wrote. While no one suffered serious injuries, at least six people were taken to hospitals for evaluation, according to the soldiers.
