Charges on Thomas Arney

The suspect was still on the scene when officers arrived. Arney told them that the incident started with a drunken argument. “[Arney] told deputies that he and his friend had been out drinking all night, then got into an argument that escalated,” the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The suspect told investigators that his friend had broken nearby car windows before approaching Arney “aggressively.” A witness said Arney shot the victim once in each leg before finally hitting him over the head with the gun.

The victim did not comply with the investigation, but the witness stated that the victim was not threatening Arney prior to the assault. Arney was taken to the Volusia County Jail, where he was booked on $25,000 bond. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident.
