NEW YORK – The lives of two 14-year-old boys, Drew Hassenbein and Ethan Falkowitz, were tragically cut short when a drunk driver, Amandeep Singh, crashed his Dodge Ram into his Alfa Romeo on a Long Island highway where he was traveling. Wrong way. The incident occurred near Jericho and resulted in the immediate deaths of Drew and Ethan, while the other two boys in the car, ages 16 and 17, suffered internal injuries but are now stable.

Drew and Ethan were talented tennis players who had been celebrating a victory in a competition just before the accident. Drew was nationally ranked and played on his high school’s varsity team at a young age, while Ethan also excelled on the varsity team.

Ethan was a calm and happy boy who saw only the good in people and was liked by everyone he came in contact with. He was loving, caring, compassionate and didn’t have a bad bone in his body. He was the best team player, hardworking and very skilled. Drew was one of the fiercest competitors and someone who was very focused and motivated to achieve his goals. He was a kind soul who was admired and respected by all who came in contact with him,” his sports team wrote on Facebook. “They both had such a bright future and so much to look forward to. May your memories be blessings to your families and friends.”

Everyone who ever came in contact with Ethan knew him as a kid who would warm up every room he walked into with his smile and his amazing personality. He was kind and considerate, and a beloved camper to everyone at Tyler Hill. Ethan lit up our tennis courts, our stage, and everywhere else in camp he set foot. He was an amazing son, brother, cousin, friend, bunkmate and more,” Ethan’s tennis team wrote on Facebook.

Drew’s tennis camp team wrote a post about him, saying: “Those of us who knew Drew saw great promise in him, not only because of his exceptional talent in tennis, where he was a nationally ranked player “But as a kind, thoughtful person and much admired friend to so many. Drew was simply a great boy from a great and loving family whose bright and promising future was cut short by a senseless tragedy.”

Captain Stephen Fitzpatrick, commanding officer of the Nassau homicide squad, said: “It was probably one of the most catastrophic scenes I’ve seen in a long time. If I had been there, I would have seen the debris field, it was almost like the car exploded”. According to Fitzpatrick, Amandeep Singh was so intoxicated, with a blood-alcohol level twice the legal driving limit, that he believed he was in New Jersey when questioned by Long Island detectives. “He asked the officers, ‘what are you doing here? It’s New Jersey.'”

Singh was charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated vehicular manslaughter, first degree vehicular manslaughter, second degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of a car accident with a fatality, driving while intoxicated and two counts of second degree assault, according to the New York Post.
