A California public defender Elliot Blair died mysteriously while visiting Mexico with his wife to celebrate their first wedding anniversary, as the family struggles to get answers about what happened, reports say. The Orange County Public Defender’s Office confirmed the death of Elliot Blair to FOX 11 Los Angeles.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy,” the office said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to Elliot’s family and all those who knew and loved him at the Orange County Public Defender’s Office.”
Blair, who had worked for the public defender’s office since 2017 after passing the bar exam, and his wife, Kim, were in Rosarito, about a 30-minute drive south of Tijuana, celebrating their first wedding anniversary “when Elliot was tragically murdered.” Jan. 14, according to the family’s GoFundMe page.
“I wish we could give everyone more information, but authorities in Mexico have released very limited information,” said fundraiser organizer Annie Rodríguez. “He was the victim of a brutal crime. His family is working with US officials to obtain more information.”
His wife, who also worked at the public defender’s office since 2017, survived, though it was unclear what violent crime allegedly occurred. Some reports suggest that he could have been murdered.

Elliot Blair was the victim of a brutal crime in Mexico
According to the Mexican website Patrulla 646, Blair, 33, fell, apparently intoxicated, from the fourth floor of Hotel Las Rocas, an oceanfront resort in Baja California. The report says that police and paramedics responded to the scene. Staff from the State Attorney General’s Office in Mexico took charge of the investigations and removal of the body.
Blair’s family claims they haven’t received much information from Mexican authorities as of Saturday afternoon, Orange County Public Defender Martin Schwarz told The Orange County Register. Schwarz said Blair had worked on felony cases out of the Santa Ana office of the Orange County Public Defender. He remembered Blair as a “devoted husband, a fine person and a fantastic attorney who dedicated his life to serving his clients and helping the county‘s most vulnerable.”
