An Arkansas man bludgeoned another to death with a hammer and left his body in the bathtub because he claims the victim was trying to “seduce” him, police said. Matthew Earl Speakman, 19, is charged with first degree murder, theft of property and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Independence County Jail on May 17, but authorities formally filed charges Tuesday.

On May 17, Speakman was allegedly in an accident while driving the 2009 Nissan Murano belonging to the victim, Jason Anderson, 49, according to the arrest affidavit. Police at the time were unable to reach the owner at his home or by phone, according to the documents.

Later, however, a “hysterical” woman called authorities to say that Anderson was dead and that she believed he was killed because his vehicle was missing. Agents obtained information about Speakman’s accident while on their way to the crime scene in the town of Sulfur Rock. At that time, Anderson was found dead in a bathtub with the water still running, they said. “Officers began further investigating the crime scene and noticed gore on the shower wall and bloody shoe prints on the living room floor from the bathroom area,” they wrote. The victim had head injuries.

“Upon removing the decedent from the bathtub, officers located a hammer, hammer handle, and three (3) large rocks within the bathtub,” they wrote. An officer found Speakman later that day in Sulfur Rock and found a methamphetamine smoking device with residue on it, according to the documents.

“During the course of the contact, Speakman offered the officer to check his shoes for contraband,” they wrote. “The officer checked the shoes and noted that they were patterned after bloody shoe prints found inside the decedent’s residence.” Speakman agreed to speak with investigators about the smoking device and its use in Anderson’s Nissan Murano, according to the documents.

After completing a bill of rights, he allegedly admitted to taking the methamphetamine smoking device from Anderson’s vehicle. Investigators said they confronted him about the dead man and Speakman’s shoe prints at the victim’s home. “You all need the truth, don’t you?” Speakman reportedly said.
