According to the criminal complaint, police responded to a report of a shooting at a home on 9th Street South in Virginia around 10:20 a.m. Dispatch told officers that a man named Robert had shot his brother in the head and that Robert was still holding him. him. At the scene, two officers found the door to the house had been opened. A man, later identified as Cope, was inside.

The officers ordered Cope to leave the home. Cope complied and officers saw that he had blood on various parts of his body, including his face and arms. Then one of the officers began to search the second floor of the house. In one of the bedrooms, the officer found Cope’s brother lying on the floor with blood near his head. He was in “agonal breathing” and unresponsive, according to the complaint.

Two people identified as the parents of the brothers were also in the room. The officer found a handgun and spent shell casing in the hallway outside the bedroom. The gun appeared to have blood on it.

Responding paramedics said Cope’s brother had an entry wound behind his left earlobe and an exit wound to his neck. He was airlifted to Essentia Health in Duluth, where he survived his first surgery. In the last ten years, Cope has been convicted three times for threats of violence and once for domestic battery.
