Police investigators arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the death of a 16-year-old girl who was found with a stab wound to the neck inside a Harlem apartment building shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, police said.
The man, Zyaire Crumbley, turned himself in to police around 9 p.m. on Monday and was charged with murder, police said. He was taken to Harlem Hospital Center for observation, where he remained until Tuesday morning.
The victim, identified as Saniyah Lawrence, was found by police officers responding to a 911 call about an attack inside an apartment on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard, according to police. She was taken to the Harlem Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said Monday that Crumbley was believed to be Saniyah’s boyfriend and that the stabbing of her stemmed from an argument.
Outside where Saniyah lived, about a mile and a half from the scene in Harlem, Monday morning, her grandmother, Denise Jackson, was distraught.
“I just want them to find it,” Jackson said. “Her face of him is on the news and she is on the run. Just find him and put him behind bars, because she didn’t do anything.”
Saniyah and Crumbley had been dating for about a year, said Derrick Ackerman, Jackson’s boyfriend.
He said that Saniyah had just started at a new school this year and that she had an entrepreneurial spirit and loved to find ways to earn money.
Mr. Ackerman said she invented batches of “slime,” a colorful, slimy putty that kids can make. She would sell it to her friends, he said.
“She used to do it and market it,” Ackerman said. “She was a girl with dreams.”
Saniyah’s murder comes amid a decline in murders and shootings in the city and in the 32nd Precinct, which covers the area of Harlem where the stabbing occurred. The precinct recorded seven murders this year through December 4, a 56 percent drop from the 16 recorded during the same period last year.
Her death is among several high-profile murders of and by teenagers this year.
In early December, 14-year-old Prince Shabazz was fatally shot outside an apartment building in the Fordham Heights section of the Bronx. And in October, 15-year-old Jayjon Burnett was fatally shot on a subway car in Queens during an argument between two groups of people. Keyondre Russell, 18, was arrested in connection with Jayjon’s death the day after the shooting.
On Monday afternoon, as crime scene tape blocked the sidewalk in front of the apartment building on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard, groups of volunteers placed fliers with Saniyah’s photo in the neighborhood.
Stephanie McGraw, founder of We All Really Matter, an organization that raises awareness about domestic violence, said she was hosting a candlelight vigil for the family on Tuesday.
“The police called me and told me to come here,” Ms McGraw said. “They said that they had a mother who had just lost her daughter and that she is here alone.” Read More
